There are many plants that can be quite toxic to cats. It is important to know which ones are safe to have around and which ones are not in order to protect your kitty.
These toxicities can cause anywhere from a mild upset stomach to serious kidney failure, and in some cases can be fatal.
These toxic plants include but are not limited to:
– Amaryllis
– Autumn Crocus
– Aloe vera
– Hemlock
– Umbrella tree
– Poinsettia
– Hosta
– Gladiola
– Begonia
– Tulip (especially the bulb)
– Lillie’s
– Hyacinth
– Spanish thyme
– Ivy
– Oleander
– Sago palm
– Daffodils
– Marijuana
– Azaleas and Rhododendrons
– Castor bean
Symptoms of Toxicity:
– Inflammation around the mouth
– Vomiting
– Diarrhea
– Difficulty breathing (typically caused from inflammation)
– Drooling
– Dilated pupils
– Frequent thirst and urination (occur when kidneys are impacted by toxicity)
– Rapid heart rate
– Skin irritation or itchiness
If you are concerned that your pet may have gotten into a toxic plant, call the pet poison helpline and seek medical attention and remove any plant material from your pets fur, skin and mouth if you can do so safely.
